Retiree release their rework of their ‘Mystery Bay’ from their debut Album, “ House or Home’ on London label Rythm Section International.
‘Mystery Bay (Club Mix)’ is a dance floor friendly mix, arranged to reflect the way it is performed in their live show. Featuring a driving club beat and new emphasis on the brass lines, the originally understated track is given new lease of life.
Speaking on the new version Retiree said:
“Mystery Bay appeared on House or Home as a 6 minute slow burner with a tease of bass and drums in the back half. This is how we felt it worked best in an album context, but we always had a plan to create a more expansive version to play live, and this is it!”
The lyrics are about an Australian Indigenous seaside community who, after thousands of years of living sustainably off the land, were banned from fishing due to commercial fishing decimating local sea life. The area was classed a marine park and all fishing banned by the government which led to the indigenous people being prosecuted for doing so. A few kilometres inland there is a heritage town preserved by the National Trust where you can visit a vintage petrol station and buy some gold rush era lollies. Through the lens of a disgruntled campground manager, the song explores the juxtaposition between these two towns.
Retiree will be performing this version of ‘Mystery Bay’ live at their upcoming debut UK tour in April/May 2019. this is the first deep house record i've bought, couldn't resist. some time ago, i started to become more familiar with deep house, kinda as a uptempo equivalent to chillhop related beats.
that release right here is a small masterpiece for me. the jazzy loops, the tight kick drums, the leading hi-hats, the psychedelic vibe - it's just perfect.
not to forget to emphasize the trumpet on "Midnight In Peckham". phenomenal.
i'm more than glad to have found this beautiful piece of art. chillhopper
